Shotgun or AR-15 For Home Defense

AR15 or Shotgun

Choosing your Weapon for Home Defense

Choosing your home defense weaponry cane be as simple or as complex as you would like it to be. For me I kept things simple but the house layout allows me to be simple as I do not have a upstairs so everything is on 1 floor. I am going to be discussions a few key points and let you get the idea of what I think you should be thinking about when choosing. This article is just comparison of AR-15 or Shotgun, a pistol is my primary.

House Layout and Features

When choosing a platform be sure to think about your house layout and features. Is your house 2 stories? Do you have long hallways. Is your house tight and closed off from room to room? I primary have a Remington 870 shotgun that I would using in the crisis of someone breaking in.

Why? House_Plans

My home is mainly open floor plan box style without any hallways from my bedroom door I can see the front door, back door and kitchen and they are less then 15 feet away. Now that doesn’t mean the at all times the Shotgun would be the better of the two but in my setup I feel that a shotgun would do better.

Depending on the characteristics of your house a AR-15 might be a better solution. Could I use a AR-15 in my house without any problems, YES! How many military videos do you see of people entering houses in random countries using AR-15s or similar weapons?

Ease of use

When choosing the weapon make sure to choose a weapon that you can practice with and get comfortable with. Take it to the range, take it out to a training center. In the academy we had to train for fire fights and running and tactical position when we may never see one but to train for it and know what your going to do. May sure its something you can reload and chamber really well and if something does malfunction you are able to correct it quick.

Training for Home Defense

training

Understand the basics of house clearing and room entering, I am not saying you need to become a operator like John Wick. But, understanding that in the event you are to defend your house, family and position that your senses and your thought processes are going to be gone. Your adrenaline is going to be pumping so hard your not going to hear noises and the world is going to pulse, your not going to hear your kids or your wife talking.

At times your going to become hyper focused and unless you have some training to put you into that situation your going to freeze up. This is not for the guys that have military experience as they have trained for this as well as most officers of the law. To give some context, use a finger gun and clear your house with ear muffs on after running for 30 mins, then add the complete fear factor to the mix. Many people freeze up and are unable to move.

Conclude of AR-15 or Shotgun for Home Defense

Which ever you are going to choose or you have already chosen make sure to look at the pros/cons of the other and who is to say you cant have both. The goal for this article is just to get you thinking and really think about what you need or want from the tool you are choosing to use. The Featured picture is showing a Diamondback AR-15 and a Mossberg 500 shotgun. Both are good platforms to have.
